This work harks back to late-medieval emotionalism in Crucifixion images: Mary's faint, Mary Magdalene's embrace of the cross, Jesus' arms sagging with the weight of his dead body. Yet the pathos is somewhat attenuated by the lighting, the soft focus, and St. John's attempt to comfort the two women.
